The Comparison Trap

September 24, 2025, Issue #29 Ever caught yourself scrolling through social media thinking, “Wow, that business owner has it all together. Meanwhile, I’m over here just trying to remember my email password”? Welcome to the comparison trap—a not-so-fun game we all play at some point.

Here’s the thing: comparing your business to someone else’s is about as useful as comparing apples to…pineapples. Sure, they’re both fruit, but that’s where the similarities end.

When you see another business posting shiny wins, you’re only seeing the highlight reel. You’re not seeing the late nights, the mistakes, or the third cup of coffee that made it possible. And yet, it’s easy to fall into the “They’re so much further ahead—what am I doing wrong?” mindset.

Spoiler: you’re probably not doing anything wrong. You’re just on a different timeline. And remember—your business is as unique as you are. No two people are the same, and no two businesses operate the same way either. What works for someone else might not work for you, and that’s okay.

Think about it: someone who’s been running their business for ten years is going to look different from someone who’s been at it for two. And that’s okay! It’s like comparing your home-cooked spaghetti to a chef’s five-star meal. Yours might not look as fancy, but hey—it still fills you up.

So how do you avoid the comparison trap?

  1. Focus on your own wins. Did you finally tackle that scary to-do list? Land a new client? Post consistently on social media for a whole week? Celebrate it. Small wins build momentum.
  2. Use comparison as inspiration, not condemnation. If you see something a competitor is doing and think, “That’s brilliant!”—take notes. Don’t beat yourself up, just adapt what works for you.
  3. Remember your “why.” Chances are, you didn’t start your business to be a carbon copy of someone else. You started it to bring your skills, your style, and your voice to the table.

At the end of the day, the only business you need to outdo is your own from last year. Progress isn’t always flashy, but it counts.

So next time you catch yourself spiralling down the comparison rabbit hole, take a breath and remind yourself: apples and pineapples are both delicious—but nobody’s asking them to be the same fruit.

“Don’t compare your life to others. There’s no comparison between the sun and the moon. They shine when it’s their time.”
