Goal Setting and Planning

February 9, 2026, Issue #38

Let’s talk about goal setting. Not the intimidating, colour-coded, 20-goal kind. The realistic kind that actually gets done.

As entrepreneurs and small business owners, we are great at juggling. Client work, emails, admin, invoices, and learning new tools. The problem is that our goals often get pushed to the side because everything else feels more urgent.

Here’s the thing. Goals are not meant to add pressure. They are meant to give you direction.

Instead of trying to tackle everything at once, focus on one to three meaningful goals. Not a long wish list. Just a few things that will genuinely move your business forward. Simple and realistic beats ambitious and exhausting every time.

Once you have a goal, break it down. Big goals rarely get done in one leap. They get done in small, manageable steps. Weekly tasks. Even daily ones. Progress matters more than perfection.

Planning is also about time, not just tasks. If something isn’t on the calendar, it’s easy for it to never happen. Even blocking 30 minutes a week to work on one goal can make a noticeable difference over time.

And let’s normalize this part. Goals change. Priorities shift. Life happens. Reviewing and adjusting your goals is not failure. It is smart planning.

This is also where delegation can be a game-changer. When routine or time-consuming tasks are off your plate, you free up mental space to focus on what actually matters. Sometimes moving forward isn’t about doing more. It is about doing less of the wrong things.

As you head into the new week, ask yourself this:

What is one goal you want to focus on right now?
And what is one small step you can take toward it this week?

Small steps still move you forward.
